Play Elmo in Grouchland Online
Guide Elmo through side-scrolling levels, jump over obstacles, trade items with Muppets, vacuum up trash, and recover pieces of his blanket in this lighthearted adventure.
I picked up Elmo in Grouchland for the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a time when licensed kids' games were everywhere. It was published by NewKidCo, and it felt like a pretty standard release for the platform, nothing groundbreaking but a decent way to pass the time if you were a fan of Sesame Street. The game follows the plot of the movie, with Elmo trying to get his blanket back from the grumpy clutches of Huxley.
You control Elmo through a series of side-scrolling levels, jumping over obstacles and interacting with characters from the show. The main goal is to recover pieces of your blanket by completing tasks, often involving trading items with other Muppets or vacuuming up piles of trash. One of the signature mechanics is using the vacuum to clean up messes, which sometimes reveals hidden objects or opens new paths. Another involves simple platforming and avoiding hazards like slippery banana peels. The pacing is slow and forgiving, clearly aimed at younger players, but it has a certain charm in its straightforwardness. It feels like a gentle, low-stakes adventure that captures the show's playful spirit.
