Empire Deluxe came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by New World Computing. It was a straightforward, turn-based strategy game from an era when complex simulations were often built on simple, effective rules. You didn't need a powerful machine to run it, just patience and a plan.
You control an entire nation's military, moving armies, navies, and air units across a grid-based world one turn at a time. The main goal is to capture every enemy capital while defending your own. Key mechanics include exploring the map screen by screen to find resources and opponents, managing production in captured cities to build your forces, and engaging in direct combat where stronger units typically destroy weaker ones. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, with difficulty that escalates sharply if an opponent gains too much ground early. It feels like a very long, very quiet game of chess where every move matters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
