Play ESPN National Hockey Night on Snes Online
Pick your NHL team, then smash into the boards in side-scrolling mode or go top-down for fast arcade action—Bill Clement’s voice cracks in occasionally like he’s watching from the couch. Season mode saves your progress, so no scribbled passwords this time.

ESPN National Hockey Night on SNES was one of those mid-90s hockey games that felt like it almost had everything—just without the real player names. You get all the NHL teams of the era, though, so you can still pretend you're Wayne Gretzky if you squint hard enough.
What I liked was the option to switch between a top-down view (for that classic arcade feel) and a side-scrolling perspective (which makes checking opponents into the boards way more satisfying). Bill Clement’s commentary pops in now and then, which was a nice touch for the time, even if he repeats himself after a while.
There’s a season mode if you’re in it for the long haul, plus quick exhibition matches when you just want to slam some pucks around. The battery save actually works, too—no scribbling down passwords here. Just don’t expect it to hold up against modern hockey sims.
