Game Overview
Fate/Extra came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2010, developed by Imageepoch and published by Marvelous Entertainment. It was part of that wave of ambitious, text-heavy RPGs that really made the PSP feel like a portable visual novel machine with some dungeon crawling thrown in. The game takes the Fate series' premise of mages and heroic spirits and drops it into a strange, digital tournament set inside a supercomputer called the Moon Cell.
You play as a student whose name and gender you choose, partnered with a Servant like Saber or Archer. Most of your time is spent exploring the game's dungeons screen by screen, hunting for keys and avoiding traps. Combat is entirely built around predicting your enemy's next move in a rock-paper-scissors style system; you input commands in advance, and if you guess wrong, you take heavy damage. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can spike sharply if you don't prepare properly. It feels like a tense, strategic puzzle dressed up as an RPG battle.
