Fighting Golf came out in the arcades in 1988 from SNK. It was a time when developers were experimenting with sports games, trying to find new ways to make familiar concepts feel fresh on those big cabinets. This one definitely took a different path from the more serious golf simulators that were starting to appear.
You control a golfer, but the objective is less about a low score and more about physically stopping your opponent from getting theirs. The signature mechanics are the power shot, which sends the ball with extra force, and the ability to directly attack your rival's ball to knock it off course. Matches are fast and surprisingly aggressive, with a difficulty that comes from anticipating your opponent's sabotage as much as judging the wind. It feels like a bar brawl disguised as a country club outing.
