Game Overview

Fighting Layer is one of those late '90s arcade fighters that never got the hype it deserved. You pick from a roster of weirdly cool characters—like a boxer with a literal steel jaw or a dude who fights with a giant yo-yo—and the combat feels weighty, almost like a halfway point between Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter. The first time I played, I got wrecked by the CPU because the timing for counters is way stricter than you'd expect.

It runs smooth on MAME if you've got the right ROM, though some of the animations look a little stiff now. Still, there's something satisfying about landing a well-timed super move and watching the health bar chunk away. Not the deepest fighter out there, but way more fun than most people realize.
