Fighting Layer is one of those late-90s arcade fighters that somehow flew under the radar but absolutely slaps. The roster’s got this weird mix of martial artists, cyborgs, and a dude who fights with a boomerang—like someone threw a bunch of random ideas at the wall and somehow they all worked.
What I love is how weighty the hits feel. When you land a clean combo, the screen shakes just enough to make it satisfying without being obnoxious. The AI’s brutal on default settings (of course), but after a few rounds, you start picking up the rhythm of each character’s quirks. My personal favorite’s the boxer, Garland—his straight punches have this ridiculous reach that catches people off guard.
It’s not the most balanced fighter out there, but that’s part of the charm. You’ll either master the jank or die trying.
