Game Overview

Oh man, The Flintstones: The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak! is one of those NES games you hear about in hushed tones at retro gaming meetups. I picked it up years ago not knowing what to expect, and suddenly I'm Fred Flintstone smacking dinosaurs with a club while riding a pterodactyl—because of course that's a thing here.

The first level throws you right into it: bright colors, that familiar Flintstones "yabba dabba doo" vibe, and these weird little cavemen enemies that bounce around like they've had too much brontosaurus juice. You'll be jumping across floating rocks, figuring out when to swing your club versus when to chuck it (pro tip: always have a spare rock handy), and occasionally stumbling into hidden areas that make you feel like a Stone Age detective.

What surprised me was how much it actually feels like playing through an episode of the show—complete with those sudden difficulty spikes that'll have you muttering "Fred, you idiot" when you miss a jump for the third time. And yeah, good luck finding a physical copy these days without selling a kidney. It's rough around the edges in that classic NES way, but there's something special about a game where Barney Rubble can ride a dinosaur into the sunset.
