You start off picking your squad—I always went with Snake Eyes because, well, ninja—and then it’s straight into chaotic shootouts against Cobra’s goons. The missions bounce between jungle bases and snowy outposts, and the controls are simple enough that you’ll be sliding behind cover and tossing grenades within minutes.
What surprised me was how much the game leans into squad tactics. You can switch between characters mid-mission, and each one has their own specialty—Heavy Duty’s basically a walking tank, while Scarlett’s sniper rifle clears rooms before anyone even spots you. It’s not the deepest strategy game, but mixing up your team keeps the firefights from getting stale.
Just don’t expect a masterpiece. The graphics are blocky even for DS standards, and some levels drag on a bit. But if you want a cheesy, explosive nostalgia trip with just enough strategy to keep things interesting, this one’s a solid pick. The final boss fight against Cobra Commander alone makes it worth the playthrough.
