I picked up G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra on PSP back in 2009, a portable tie-in to the summer movie developed by Double Helix and published by EA. It was a straightforward action game for its time, fitting right in with other handheld titles that emphasized quick, pick-up-and-play sessions. The PSP had a solid library of arcade-style games, and this one aimed to deliver some explosive fun on the go.

You control one of several G.I. Joe team members, each with unique weapons and special abilities, fighting through waves of Cobra soldiers across various missions. The main goal is to stop Cobra Commander and his forces, often by completing objective-based stages that involve destroying targets or defending positions. Signature mechanics include switching between characters on the fly to adapt to different combat situations, and activating an overpowered Accelerator Suit that lets you tear through enemies temporarily. The pacing is fast, with enemies appearing frequently, and the difficulty can spike during boss fights or crowded encounters. It feels like a loud, chaotic arcade shooter that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
