Galaga first appeared in arcades in 1981, but I got to know it on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Namco developed it, and it was one of those games that felt perfectly at home on the NES, a straightforward shooter in an era full of them. It didn't try to be anything more than what it was, a test of reflexes and pattern recognition.
You control a small starfighter at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right to shoot waves of alien insects that dive and swarm. Your main goal is to survive as long as possible, clearing each formation to progress. The signature mechanics are the tractor beam, which can capture your ship, and the chance to win it back for double firepower. The pacing is relentless; the difficulty ramps up quickly as the enemy movements become more aggressive and unpredictable. It feels tense and rewarding when you finally break a difficult wave.
