Game Overview
Ganryu (or Musashi Ganryuki, depending on which arcade cabinet you stumbled across back in the day) is one of those classic side-scrolling samurai brawlers that feels like it was designed to eat your quarters. You play as Miyamoto Musashi—yes, that Musashi—hacking through waves of enemies with quick slashes and the occasional screen-clearing special move. The pacing’s brutal—enemies come at you fast, and if you’re not careful, you’ll get cornered before you even realize it.
What I love about it is how simple but punishing it is. No fancy combos, just timing and spacing. The feudal Japan aesthetic holds up surprisingly well, with these moody backgrounds that make you feel like you’re fighting your way through an old woodblock print. And that final duel against Sasaki Kojiro on the bridge? Still one of the most satisfying boss fights in retro gaming.
