Game Overview

Garou Densetsu - Shukumei no Tatakai, known outside Japan as Fatal Fury, was released by SNK for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It arrived during a period when fighting games were rapidly gaining popularity, and while it didn't have the polish of some later titles, it was a solid attempt to bring an arcade experience home. The game features a small but memorable cast of fighters, each with their own motivations and moves, set against the backdrop of the fictional South Town.

You control one of several martial artists, including Terry and Andy Bogard, as you fight through a series of opponents in one-on-one combat. The main objective is to defeat the final boss, Geese Howard, to avenge your fallen master. Two notable mechanics include the ability to switch between two planes of movement during fights, adding a layer of spatial strategy, and the use of special moves executed through specific joystick and button combinations. The pacing is brisk, though the difficulty can spike sharply, especially against later opponents who exploit cheap tactics. It feels like a rough but earnest translation of the arcade original, complete with all its quirks and challenges.
