Game Overview

Gary Grigsby's Pacific War came out in 2000 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by SSI. It was a late entry for the platform, arriving when many players had already moved on to Windows, but it offered a depth that few other wargames matched at the time.

You control Allied or Japanese forces across the entire Pacific theater, managing everything from individual task forces and air squadrons to supply convoys and amphibious invasions. The main objective is to outmaneuver and outlast your opponent through strategic bombing, naval engagements, and island hopping. Key mechanics include detailed logistics planning, where you track fuel and ammunition for every unit, and phased turn resolution that processes movement, combat, and reconnaissance in sequential steps. The pacing is deliberate, often slow, and the learning curve is steep, demanding patience and careful attention. Playing it feels like conducting a vast, intricate operation where every decision carries weight and consequences unfold over weeks of in-game time.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
