Game Overview

Gateway to the Savage Frontier came out on the Amiga in 1991 from Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was part of that wave of early 90s computer RPGs that tried to bring the Dungeons & Dragons experience home, with all the text, stats, and grid-based movement that entailed. You got a full party adventure without needing a group of friends gathered around a table, which felt like a pretty big deal at the time.

You control a party of up to six characters, creating them from scratch or importing veterans from the previous game. Your main goal is to investigate a strange threat along the trade route known as the Savage Frontier, which involves a lot of talking to locals, following clues, and delving into dungeons. The exploration is screen by screen, with turn based combat that requires careful positioning and spell management. The game can be unforgiving; a wrong turn or a missed clue can leave you stumbling, and the random encounters keep you on your toes. It feels like piecing together a dangerous mystery where every fight demands your full attention.
