Explore caverns, fight off creatures with your sword, switch to first-person to shoot monsters, and collect pieces of a powerful artifact in this 1989 MS-DOS classic.
Savage was a 1989 MS-DOS game from Probe Software that felt very much of its time, a product of that era when developers were still figuring out how to translate arcade-style action onto the home computer. It didn't have the polish of bigger titles, but it had a strange, ambitious energy that made it stand out on a shelf full of shareware disks.
You control a lone warrior navigating a series of caverns, switching between two distinct gameplay styles. One moment you're in a side-scrolling view, methodically exploring caves, jumping over pits, and using your sword to fight off bats and other creatures. Then, without warning, the perspective shifts to a first-person view for these intense tunnel sequences where monsters fly directly toward the screen, and you have to shoot them down with a bow. The objective is to survive these environments and collect pieces of a powerful artifact. The constant shift in perspective keeps you on your toes, and the difficulty is unforgiving, often demanding quick reflexes and careful resource management. It feels unpredictable and a little rough, but there's a genuine thrill in mastering its split personality.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
