Play Gear Works on Msdos Online
In Gear Works, you pick up and place gears on a grid, solving puzzles by making them mesh and spin as you tackle increasingly tricky challenges.
Gear Works came out in 1992 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection from Twilight. It was a simple, grid-based puzzle game from an era when many developers were exploring the potential of logic and spatial challenges on the PC. You didn't need a powerful machine to run it, just a keyboard and some patience.
You control a cursor to pick up and place interlocking gears on a board, trying to form a complete, turning mechanism. The main objective is to fill the entire grid so that every gear meshes and spins when you start the machine. The signature mechanics involve rotating pieces to find the right orientation and managing limited space, often forcing you to backtrack and rethink your entire approach. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative at first, but the difficulty ramps up significantly as the boards get more complex and the available gear types multiply. It feels like quietly untangling a knot in your mind, one satisfying click at a time.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
