Gettysburg - The Turning Point is one of those old-school MS-DOS war games that somehow makes moving little hexagon units feel like life-or-death decisions. You pick a side—Union blue or Confederate gray—and suddenly you're sweating over troop placements at Devil's Den or second-guessing whether to commit to Pickett's Charge. The maps are simple by today's standards, but the terrain actually matters here. Those wooded hills? Perfect for ambushes. Open fields? A slaughterhouse if you time it wrong.
What surprised me was how much personality the units have despite being just numbers and sprites. Watch a brigade's morale crumble after taking cannon fire, or feel that rush when your flanking maneuver actually works. It's slow, methodical, and weirdly tense—like chess if every pawn had a name and a musket. The lack of modern polish might throw some people off, but if you stick with it, there's a brutally honest strategy game underneath. Just don't expect mercy when the AI starts outmaneuvering you at Cemetery Ridge.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
