Golvellius is this weird little gem on the Master System that feels like Zelda got mixed up with a side-scroller halfway through. You start off in an overworld that’s pure top-down adventure—cutting grass, finding hidden caves, the usual—but then the dungeons flip to this awkward-but-charming side-scrolling thing where you’re jumping over pits and slashing at bats. It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does.
The first time I played, I got wrecked by some floating eyeball in a graveyard because I didn’t realize you could upgrade your sword. There’s this whole bartering system where you trade crystals for better gear, and if you miss that, good luck surviving the desert area later. The music’s got that classic Sega FM synth sound, all bouncy and weirdly catchy. Not the deepest RPG out there, but it’s got this scrappy charm that makes you want to see what weird area pops up next.
