Game Overview

Grand Prix on the Game Boy was a 1990 release from developer/publisher HAL Laboratory, a straightforward top-down racing game that fit right in with the portable system's early library of simple, focused experiences. It didn't try to be a visual showcase; it was just a solid, no-frills racing title you could pull out for a quick race.

You control a single race car from an overhead perspective, navigating tight, twisting tracks against a field of aggressive computer opponents. The main objective is to win a series of championship cups by finishing first in each race. Signature mechanics include a very deliberate drifting system for taking sharp corners and managing a limited turbo boost that refills by driving over special markers on the track. The AI racers are notoriously aggressive, often bumping you into walls or off the course entirely, which gives the game a consistently challenging and sometimes frustrating pace. It feels like a constant, tense battle for position where a single mistake can cost you the entire race.
