Guardian Heroes is one of those games that sticks with you—part brawler, part RPG, with this weirdly deep combat system that still feels fresh today. You pick from four heroes (or unlock more later), each with totally different playstyles. Han smashes faces but can’t cast spells, Randy’s a glass cannon mage, Ginjirou zips around like a ninja, and Nicole’s your healer. The fighting’s way more involved than your typical button-masher—you’ve got light/heavy attacks, special moves pulled off with fighting game inputs, and even blocking (which I never got good at).

What’s wild is how much the game changes based on your choices. Stages branch depending on where you go, and there’s this karma system that judges whether you’re a hero or a jerk (I accidentally punted a villager once and felt guilty for days). Even solo, you’ve got an AI partner whose behavior you tweak—set them to aggressive and they’ll charge in, cowardly and they’ll hang back. And if you’ve got friends? Six-player chaos with every enemy and boss unlocked as playable characters. The Saturn’s hardware barely holds it together when the screen fills up, but that’s half the charm.

It’s got that classic ‘90s anime aesthetic, too—big sprites, ridiculous special effects, and a story about wizards, rebellion, and a sword that might save the world (or doom it). The writing’s cheesy in the best way, and the soundtrack slaps. Just don’t expect to breeze through—some of those late-game enemies hit like trucks.
