Guardian Heroes came out for the Sega Saturn in 1996, developed by Treasure. It arrived during a time when the Saturn was full of ambitious 2D games trying to push what sprites could do, and this one stood out immediately for its chaotic, layered brawling and branching story paths.

You control one of several heroes, each with unique attacks and magic, fighting through screen after screen of enemies across a fantasy world. The main goal involves protecting a mysterious girl from an undead army, but your choices alter which factions you fight and which endings you see. Key mechanics include a three plane battle system letting you dodge into the foreground or background, a huge variety of combos and spells, and RPG style leveling up that lets you customize your character's strength and abilities. The pacing is relentless, with dozens of enemies filling the screen at once, and the difficulty demands you learn how to block and counter. It feels like controlling a riot, in the best way possible.
