Download Guardian Heroes (J) ROM – SEGA Saturn Game
Picking Randy the sorcerer sounded smart until enemies closed the gap—blocking matters here, and those fighting game inputs make combos feel weighty. Love how you can tweak your AI buddy’s aggression mid-brawl while the story branches based on your messy choices.
Game Overview
Guardian Heroes is one of those Sega Saturn gems that still feels fresh decades later. You start by picking one of four heroes—I went with Randy the sorcerer first, thinking magic would make things easier (turns out getting punched in the face still hurts when you're a squishy wizard). The combat's way deeper than your typical side-scroller, with proper fighting game inputs for special moves and a block button that actually matters.
What really hooked me was how chaotic it gets. Even in single-player, you've got a second AI-controlled ally brawling alongside you, and you can tweak their behavior on the fly—tell them to go berserk or hang back like a coward. The branching paths and karma system mean your choices actually shape the story, and there's this ridiculous six-player versus mode where you can play as random enemies from the campaign. It's the kind of game where you'll accidentally punch a civilian, feel bad about it, then immediately get distracted by leveling up your ninja's backflip kick.
Also, the sprite work is gorgeous—those Saturn colors still pop.
