Game Overview

Hanafuda Ou is basically Nintendo going back to its roots—before Mario, before consoles, they were all about these beautiful flower cards. This SNES version from '94 takes the classic Japanese card game and gives it that sweet 16-bit polish.

At first glance, it's just matching cards with seasonal flowers, but there's this weirdly addictive rhythm to it. The AI opponents actually put up a decent fight, and the little animations when you score a combo are oddly satisfying. I kept catching myself saying "just one more round" way too often.

Fun bit of trivia: if you squint at the card designs, you can spot where early Nintendo artists reused these motifs later in stuff like Mario Bros. The music's all shamisen and woodblocks too—total nostalgia trip.
