Game Overview

Hard Nova came out in 1990 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series from Electronic Arts. It was a space adventure game from a time when these kinds of open-ended sci-fi RPGs were still finding their footing on the PC. You start by creating a character, choosing your gender and background, which immediately sets the tone for a personal journey rather than a fixed story.

You control a freelance pilot trying to make a living across a handful of star systems, taking on missions from different factions, trading goods, and upgrading your ship. The main objective is really whatever you decide to pursue; you can hunt bounties, explore derelict stations, or get tangled in local politics. Signature mechanics include pausing the real-time combat to issue precise orders to your ship and crew, managing your limited fuel and repair resources carefully, and making dialogue choices that can permanently alter your standing with various groups. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is unforgiving; a wrong move in a dogfight or a poorly chosen word can end your run. It feels like carving out a precarious existence in a cold, indifferent universe.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
