Harvest Moon DS is one of those games where you start thinking you'll just plant a few turnips, and suddenly it's 2 AM and you're still trying to woo the mermaid bride. The basics are familiar—tend crops, raise animals, upgrade your farm—but the twist here is rescuing the Harvest Goddess by tracking down 101 little sprites hidden everywhere. Some are easy to find, others make you want to throw your DS across the room.

What surprised me was how much you can actually do. There's mining, cooking, even a weirdly addictive casino where I blew all my turnip profits on blackjack. The touch screen controls feel natural—brushing cows with the stylus never gets old, though they do kick sometimes. And yeah, the marriage options are wild (a mermaid? Really?). Just don't forget to plug in your GBA copy of Friends of Mineral Town if you want extra brides—this game loves its weird little crossovers.

It's got that classic Harvest Moon charm, but with enough new stuff to keep even series veterans busy for ages.
