Heavyweight Champ came out for the Sega Master System in 1987, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the earlier boxing games on the console, arriving before the genre became more common with titles like Greatest Heavyweights. The graphics were simple, blocky sprites against a flat blue background, but it had a certain charm that fit right in with other SMS sports titles of the time.
You control a boxer from a side view, moving left and right to dodge or get in close. The main goal is to knock out your opponent within a set number of rounds. You throw jabs and hooks with the button, timing them to break through the opponent's guard. A key mechanic is the stamina bar; wild punching drains it fast, leaving you vulnerable. Matches are quick, often decided by a few well-placed punches, and the difficulty can spike sharply against later opponents. It feels satisfying to land a clean combo and see the referee start the count.
