Game Overview

Heavyweight Championship Boxing came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Tose and published by Tonkin House. It was one of the few boxing games on the system, arriving in an era where portable sports sims were still figuring out how to translate complex action onto that small, green screen. You didn't get much spectacle, just you and another boxer in a ring, but it had a certain straightforward appeal if you were into the sport.

You control a boxer from a side view, moving back and forth to dodge swings and position yourself for counterattacks. The main goal is to win matches by knockout or decision, working your way up the ranks. Two key mechanics define the fight: a stamina bar that depletes with every punch you throw or take, forcing you to manage your aggression, and a block button you must time carefully to avoid major damage. The pacing is deliberate, almost sluggish, making every punch feel consequential. It feels like a tense, tactical grind where a single mistake can cost you the round.
