Game Overview

Heisei Gunjin Shougi came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, developed by I'Max and published by Yojigen. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when many players were already looking ahead to newer consoles, but it offered a fresh take on a classic Japanese board game.

You control a player character who moves across a map screen, entering towns and buildings to challenge opponents in games of shogi. The main objective is to defeat increasingly skilled rivals and rise through the competitive ranks. Signature mechanics include animated battle sequences where captured pieces react with exaggerated expressions, and a helpful hint system that suggests possible moves during matches. The pacing is deliberate, with matches growing steadily more complex as you progress. It feels like a thoughtful, almost meditative experience, wrapped in a layer of playful character.
