Game Overview

Heisei Shin Onigashima - Zenpen came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1997, developed and published by Nintendo. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when many players were already moving to newer consoles, but it offered a distinct kind of adventure rooted in Japanese folklore. The game is essentially the first part of a two-part story, a digital retelling of the Momotaro legend.

You control two characters, a dog and a monkey, switching between them to overcome environmental puzzles. The dog can sniff out hidden items and clues, while the monkey can climb to high ledges and throw objects. Your main goal is to explore the island screen by screen, gathering information and tools to prepare for the arrival of the hero, Momotaro. The pacing is deliberate, focused on observation and item use rather than combat. It feels like being part of a collaborative, interactive story where every solved puzzle brings the folktale to life.
