Game Overview

Hired Guns is one of those Amiga games that still feels fresh decades later—mostly because it’s absolute chaos in the best way. You pick a squad of four mercs (or go solo and control them all) and get dumped onto this hostile planet where everything wants to kill you. The screen splits into separate views for each character, which sounds messy, but it actually works—you’re constantly switching between them, managing ammo, health, and weird sci-fi gear while mutants and robots try to flank you.

Playing alone? It’s tense, methodical, like a futuristic chess match where every wrong move gets someone exploded. But with friends? Pure anarchy. Up to four players can jump in, each controlling their own merc, and suddenly it’s a mix of teamwork and betrayal—especially in the Short Action mode where only one of you gets to escape alive. The Training mode eases you in, but the real meat is the Full Campaign, where you’re hunting down fusion cores across 20-odd missions that get brutally creative with traps and enemy swarms.

It’s clunky by modern standards, sure—lots of mouse-clicking and inventory juggling—but there’s nothing else quite like it. Even the three-player setup, with its weird asymmetrical screen split, feels weirdly ahead of its time. Just don’t trust your friends near the exit.
