I picked up The Hobbit for Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a game developed by Inevitable Entertainment and published by Sierra. It was a time when handhelds were really coming into their own, and licensed titles based on big fantasy stories were everywhere. This one stood out for trying to capture the spirit of Tolkien’s book in a compact, playable form.

You control Bilbo Baggins, moving him through a series of interconnected screens that make up the world. The main goal is to help the dwarves reclaim their homeland, which involves a lot of exploration, light combat with creatures like goblins and spiders, and collecting key items to progress. You use a short sword for close attacks and can find a bow for ranged fights, plus there’s an emphasis on puzzle solving and interacting with the environment. The pacing is deliberate, with some tricky platforming and enemy patterns that keep you alert. It feels like a thoughtful, hands-on adventure where every screen brings something new to discover.
