Ikari Warriors III: The Rescue is a 1989 arcade game by SNK, playable today through MAME emulation. It arrived late in the arcade run for the original Ikari series, a time when run and gun games were common but still evolving. You control a lone commando, Ralf, on a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist from a hostile military force.

You guide Ralf through jungles, caves, and enemy bases, clearing each screen of soldiers and vehicles before moving forward. The signature mechanic is the 8-way rotating joystick that lets you aim and fire independently from your movement, a feature that was still novel then. You also drive tanks, which you can enter and exit, adding a layer of tactical choice to the straightforward shooting. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all sides, and the difficulty is punishing if you don't master the rotation. It feels like a constant, tense dance of positioning and quick aim.
