Explore a surreal house, solve puzzles, negotiate with quirky gnomes, and interact with strange objects to find your way out in Jinxter, a 1987 MS-DOS text adventure.
Jinxter came out in 1987 from Magnetic Scrolls, one of those MS-DOS text adventures that felt a little more polished than some of its peers. It didn't rely on parser guesswork as much; you could tell the developers put effort into the descriptions and responses, which made exploring its odd world a bit more engaging than the usual fare from that era.
You play as a character trying to escape a surreal, dreamlike house by solving puzzles and interacting with its bizarre inhabitants. The main goal is to find a way out, but the journey involves negotiating with gnomes, investigating strange objects, and using items in unconventional ways. The game uses a standard verb-noun parser but stands out with its detailed room descriptions and witty, often sarcastic, responses to player mistakes. Pacing is deliberate, with puzzles that require careful observation and lateral thinking rather than brute force. It feels like wandering through a clever, slightly unhinged story where every interaction holds potential for surprise or frustration.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
