Joust came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, a port of the Williams Electronics arcade game. It was a strange, memorable title in a library filled with straightforward platformers and shooters. You controlled a knight riding a flying ostrich, tasked with clearing wave after wave of enemy knights mounted on vultures.
You flap to gain height, then dive to collide with opponents; hitting them from above shatters their armor and turns them into an egg to collect before it hatches. The screen wraps around, and crumbling platforms force constant movement. The pterodactyl that appears if you take too long is pure dread. It feels frantic and oddly graceful, a constant fight for positioning in the air.
