Joust 2: Survival of the Fittest came out in 1986 from Williams Electronics, and playing it on MAME brings back that specific arcade feel. It was a time when sequels tried to build on familiar ideas with new hazards and a bit more complexity, and this one definitely followed that pattern.
You control a knight riding an ostrich, flapping to gain height and tilting to dive. The goal is to clear each screen of enemy riders by colliding with them from above, knocking them off their mounts. Key mechanics include bouncing off moving platforms to gain momentum and avoiding pterodactyls that can snatch you right out of the air. The pacing is relentless, with lava steadily rising in some stages, forcing quick decisions. It feels tense and physical, a constant scramble for the high ground.
