Kaisertal: Fight the Necronis War is one of those GBA games that somehow slipped under the radar, which is a shame because it nails that perfect mix of strategy and dark fantasy. You start off with a ragtag group of soldiers—knights, archers, the usual—but the twist is the undead army you're up against just doesn’t quit. The first few battles feel manageable, until suddenly you’re surrounded by skeletons and realizing you should’ve positioned your healer better.

The pixel art has this grim, moody vibe, and the music? All minor keys and ominous drums. It’s like someone took Fire Emblem and dipped it in a gothic horror novel. What I love is how punishing it can be—no hand-holding here. Lose a unit, and they’re gone for good. But when you pull off a flawless ambush or barely survive a boss fight? So satisfying.

If you’ve still got a GBA lying around (or an emulator), this one’s worth digging up. Just don’t blame me when you lose track of time trying to outmaneuver zombie cavalry.
