Game Overview

Kendo Rage came out on the Super Nintendo in 1993 from a company called Datam Polystar. It was one of those many action games that tried to capture some of the energy of the more popular titles on the system, but it had its own strange personality. You don't see many games where the main character is a schoolgirl whose primary motivation is winning a car.

You play as a kendo student named Shun, and your goal is to fight through a series of themed worlds to collect pieces of a magical car engine. The main action is moving screen by screen, using your bamboo sword to slash at an odd assortment of enemies like pandas and ghosts. You also have a psychic attack that you charge up, which adds a small layer of strategy to the straightforward combat. The pacing is fairly quick, though some enemy patterns and platforming sections can feel a bit cheap. It feels like a short, chaotic trip through a very specific and slightly unhinged version of the 16-bit era.
