Nintendo released Donkey Kong in 1981 as an arcade cabinet game, a time when standing at a machine with a joystick and a single button was the standard. It was one of the early platformers, built around the simple but effective idea of climbing to the top of a stage.

You control a carpenter named Jumpman, later known as Mario, who must rescue a woman from a giant ape. You move from the bottom of the screen to the top, jumping over rolling barrels, climbing ladders, and avoiding fireballs. The main objective is to reach the top of each stage while the ape throws obstacles your way. The pacing is relentless; you have to make quick decisions about when to jump and which path to take up the structure. It feels tense and immediate, a test of timing and patience where every mistake costs you a life.
