Game Overview

If you've ever wished Fire Emblem had more clanking metal knights and dieselpunk vibes, Koutetsu no Kishi 3 is your SNES holy grail. You start off shuffling these hulking mechs—well, technically "armored knights," but let's be real, they're mechs—across grid maps that feel like a brutal chess match. The first mission throws you into a muddy European battlefield where positioning matters way more than brute force; put your heavy hitter too far forward, and suddenly you're surrounded by enemy lancers.

What surprised me was how much customization there is—you're not just moving units, you're tweaking their gear, swapping weapons mid-battle, and even sacrificing weaker units to protect your aces. The sprites are chunky in that perfect SNES way, with satisfying metal-on-metal crunch sounds when attacks land. It's a shame this never left Japan, but the menus are just intuitive enough that you can muddle through without knowing kanji. Just expect to restart missions a lot when your favorite knight gets ambushed by cavalry.

This is the kind of game that makes you lean in close to the screen, muttering "okay, if I move here first..." under your breath.
