Lock On came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a time when flight sims were pushing into more accessible, action-focused territory. It was developed by Origin Systems, a company better known for their role-playing games, but here they delivered a straightforward combat flight experience without the complexity of a full simulator. You got in, you flew, you fought; it was very much of its era, built for quick sessions and instant engagement.
You pilot a fighter jet through a series of missions, engaging enemy aircraft and ground targets with missiles and a cannon. The main objective is to complete your assigned sortie, which usually involves destroying a specific number of foes or protecting friendly units. Signature mechanics include a radar system for tracking enemies off-screen and a targeting lock that lets you fire heat-seeking missiles once you maintain a bead on a target. The pacing is brisk, missions are short, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly if you lose situational awareness. It feels immediate and tense, especially when multiple bandits close in and your missile warning alarm starts blaring.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
