Record of Lodoss War on the Super Nintendo came out in 1995 from Kadokawa Shoten. It was part of that wave of mid-90s RPGs that tried to translate complex fantasy stories into the 16-bit format, building on the foundation of earlier dungeon crawlers but with its own distinct, almost methodical pace. The graphics and music do a solid job of evoking the feel of the original novels and anime, using the system's capabilities to render dark forests and deep caves without a lot of flash.

You control a party of adventurers, including the knight Parn and his companions, exploring the continent of Lodoss screen by screen. The main goal is to thwart an ancient evil, which involves delving into multi-level dungeons, fighting monsters in first-person turn-based combat, and gathering key items to progress. You manage your party's equipment and spells carefully, as resources feel limited and the difficulty can be punishing if you're not prepared. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes grueling trek through a world that doesn't care if you succeed.
