Game Overview

I picked up Madden NFL 2000 for the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a handheld football game from EA Sports. It was one of the few NFL options on the system at the time, and it fit right in with the era's pixelated, portable sports titles. You didn't expect console-level detail, but it was football you could take anywhere, which was the whole point.

You control the entire team, calling plays from a top-down perspective and moving players with the D-pad. The main goal is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball downfield, either running or passing. Signature mechanics include selecting from a decent range of offensive and defensive plays before each snap, and managing the game clock strategically. The pacing is methodical, almost like a slower, thoughtful version of arcade football, and the difficulty can spike against tougher teams. It feels like a stripped-down but genuine football experience that demands patience and smart play-calling.
