Manhunter: New York is one of those weird, moody Sierra adventures that feels like it stumbled out of an alternate universe. Instead of the usual third-person cartoon style, you're staring at these grainy, first-person scenes of a dystopian NYC—abandoned subway tunnels, creepy alleyways, all that good stuff. No text parser either; you click (well, awkwardly keyboard-navigate) through a sparse interface that somehow makes everything feel more tense.
The whole thing plays like a detective noir where someone forgot to give you the case files. You’re tracking people with this glitchy MAD device, piecing together clues from environmental details instead of dialogue or exposition. Half the time I wasn’t sure if I was following the story right, but that kinda added to the vibe—like you’re some undercover agent drowning in conspiracy. And yeah, the controls are janky by modern standards (using the mouse feels like giving directions to a stubborn taxi driver), but it’s worth wrestling with for the atmosphere alone.
Funny thing is, they followed it up with San Francisco using the same old AGI engine instead of Sierra’s newer tech, which just makes both games feel like artifacts from a stranger timeline. Shame we never got that London finale—this series had a cult following for a reason. If you’re into atmospheric, experimental stuff from the late ‘80s, this one sticks with you.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
