Game Overview
Mario Must Die (Final Level Only) is that one SNES romhack your friend swore wasn't that hard—until you watched them throw a controller at hour three. It takes everything brutal about late-game Mario and dials it up: sawblades where there should be coins, bottomless pits disguised as innocent gaps, and Bullet Bills that seem to have personal vendettas.
At first, it feels like classic Super Mario World, but then you notice the spikes hidden just off-screen during your running jump. Or the way the Piranha Plants spit fire in sync with your landing. The level design is diabolical in that old-school way—no cheap glitches, just perfectly placed agony. I lost count of my deaths somewhere after "Mario" became a permanent pancake.
Honestly? It's kind of glorious if you're into punishment. The music even taunts you with cheerful 16-bit chirps as you plummet (again). Only try this if you've ever thought "Yoshi's Island was too forgiving."
