Game Overview
Mario Power Tennis is basically tennis turned up to 11 with Mario characters smacking balls at each other. You start off picking your favorite Nintendo character—I always go for Waluigi because his lanky animations crack me up—and then you're immediately thrown into these ridiculous courts. One minute you're playing on a pirate ship with cannonballs interrupting the match, the next you're dodging Chain Chomps on Bowser's court.
The power shots are where it gets properly chaotic. Each character has their own ridiculous special move—Peach floats mid-air for impossible returns, Donkey Kong smashes the ball so hard it leaves smoke trails. At first I kept whiffing the timing, but once you get the hang of it, pulling off a perfect power shot feels so satisfying.
It's the little details that make it: Yoshi's squeaky shoe sounds when he runs, Luigi's panicked backhand swings, the way the crowd gasps when you're about to land a match point. Still holds up as one of the best party games for the GameCube.
