Game Overview

Mario Story (Japan) is that weird, wonderful N64 game where Mario looks like he's made of paper—and honestly, it works. You jump into this flat, pop-up book world where everything folds and flips in the most satisfying way. At first it seems like a regular Mario adventure, but then you realize it's actually an RPG with turn-based battles. Weird combo? Maybe, but the timing-based attacks (press A at the right moment to boost your damage) keep fights from feeling stale.

The story’s surprisingly deep for a Mario game—Bowser’s up to his usual nonsense, but there’s this whole star spirit thing going on, and the writing’s got this goofy charm. One minute you’re helping a chain chomp with existential dread, the next you’re solving puzzles by turning into a paper airplane. It shouldn’t all fit together, but somehow it does.

If you’ve only played the later Paper Mario games, this one’s rougher around the edges, but there’s something special about how it all started. The music’s cheery, the battles are just strategic enough without being overwhelming, and that paper aesthetic? Still holds up.
