Game Overview

Mario & Yoshi came out on the Game Boy in 1991, a puzzle game from Nintendo that felt right at home on the small screen. It was one of those titles you’d play between bus stops, simple in concept but just engaging enough to keep your thumbs busy. The graphics were clean and functional, typical of early handheld efforts, with a cheerful aesthetic that didn’t try to overreach the hardware.

You control a cursor to pick up and drop eggs onto a playfield where enemies crawl below. The goal is to match eggs of the same color in rows of three or more, clearing the screen before it fills up. It plays out screen by screen, with a gradual increase in enemy speed and variety that keeps you adjusting your timing. The real hook is the physicality of stacking; eggs don’t always fall where you expect, and a misplaced drop can quickly turn orderly rows into a mess. It feels like a race against your own mistakes, tense but never unfair, and there’s a quiet satisfaction in watching a well-planned row vanish with a soft pop.
