Play Mars - God of War Online

Mars: God of War came out in 2001 for MAME, the arcade emulator, and was originally developed by Gaelco. It's a side-scrolling hack and slash from that era when arcade cabinets were still pumping out straightforward, action-focused games. You play as Mars, the Roman god of war, and the whole thing has that gritty, slightly chunky pixel art style that was common before everything went polygonal.

You control Mars directly, moving him through screen after screen of enemies, using a large sword for close combat and a bow for picking off distant foes. The main goal is to fight through mythological creatures like skeletons and hydras, clearing each area before moving on. Two key mechanics are a rage meter that builds as you take damage, letting you unleash powerful screen-clearing attacks when full, and the ability to switch between your sword and bow to handle different threats. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can feel punishing if you aren't careful with your positioning and timing. It feels heavy and deliberate, each swing of your sword landing with a sense of impact that makes even the smaller enemies satisfying to cut down.
