I picked up Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects on the Nintendo DS back in 2005, a portable version of the console brawler developed by Nihilistic Software. It was a time when having a full roster of Marvel heroes in your pocket still felt novel, even if the hardware had its clear limits. The game tried to capture that big comic book crossover energy on the small screen, pitting familiar faces against a new group of villains called the Imperfects.

You control a selection of Marvel heroes and the new Imperfect characters across a series of 3D fighting arenas. The main objective is to simply beat your opponent, often using the environment to your advantage; you can pick up cars or lampposts to use as weapons or throw them to create distance. Each character has a unique set of special moves activated with simple button combinations, like webbing an enemy as Spider-Man or unleashing a lightning attack as Storm. The pacing is fast and the controls can feel a bit stiff, leading to matches that are more about frantic button mashing than precise technique. It feels like a messy, chaotic brawl that is occasionally brilliant in its absurdity.
