Game Overview

Medarot 3: Kabuto Version came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer. It was part of a wave of late-era GBC titles that tried to squeeze a little more out of the hardware before the Advance arrived, offering a deeper, more tactical take on the monster battling genre that was everywhere at the time.

You control a young boy who collects and customizes robotic partners called Medarots, swapping out their arms, legs, and specialized equipment to suit different battle scenarios. The main goal involves progressing through a linear story, challenging other Medarot users, and exploring small, screen-by-screen environments between turn-based fights. Combat uses a grid where positioning affects your attack range and evasion; you also manage a limited action point system each turn, choosing between moving, attacking, or using special skills. The pacing is deliberate, with a moderate difficulty curve that asks you to really think about your loadout before each major fight. It feels like directing a clunky, charming puppet show where every decision carries weight.
